Updated Info and places to be

More than slightly embarrassed to say that it has been sooooo long since the last update. As technology and life changes, so do the ways we update or do things. Make sure to check out www.facebook.com/bigwaterfishing for regular updates on fishing, even if you don't have a FB account you can get to it without an acct via the icon on the bigwaterfishing homepage.

Truly the main reason for such a lack of content on this blog as of late is that I write a weekly column for both Outdoor Life and North American Fisherman...make sure to check them out. A guys only has so much to say about fishing! The links are posted on the bigwater FB page also

Finally... since its about 100 degrees today, lets add a ice fishing pic to remind us that we all will be crying its too cold in just a few months!!!!!

Long over due ----again ICAST

I'll be the first one to say I have done a poor job of keeping up with the blog this year. I have seriously averaged 70+hrs/ week for more than a year...good problem, but exhausted.

I have been doing a weekly blog for North American Fisherman which has been well received...give it look. A few other blogs for companies I work with and I'm blogged out!

Something is worth mentioning---Icast was this last week and I got to travel to Orlando Florida to see all the new products and a lot of old friends.

Many of the products left me wanting more and were just recycled ideas with a few that left my jaw on the floor. The new Minn-Kota trolling motor is a game changer. It automatically deploys and stows, as well--the the shaft powers up and down.

Not to be outdone by their parent company, Humminbird introduced a feature called auto chart that allows you to make custom chart son your unit. No messing with outside servers or giving your way-points to anyone else. Look this stuff up you will be amazed. A lot of the new gear will be available at fishusa.com

Be on the look out for some other cool new gear to hit the shelves this year...as well as some big news from the boys at Bigwaterfishing.

Long Overdue

My blog post and the break in winter are both overdue.

After a few long days I was able to get my new 621 all rigged up and water ready. A lot of time and custom equipment goes into the to make them "bigwater" ready!

I think that after such a long hard winter I can appreciate both a break in the weather and some good boat fishing. We started out our open water season with a huge bang. A few days into it I shot an episode of Field and Stream's Hook Shots. What a riot...in two short days we managed to boat more than 50 walleyes over 9lbs, with a majority of them over 10. It just goes to show you what a amazing fishery we have on Erie.

As good as it is I still think we need to remember that we have about 50 million less fish in it as we did when I was a kid.

Get out there and enjoy it!

Ice Time

I just read that the Great Lakes have more ice coverage than they have had in more than 100 years. I guess Al Gore didn't get the global warming thing right??? This has allowed me to spend a whole lot more time on Lake Erie chasing my eyes. After fishing as many days as I ever have I think they thought they were going to get a little break...no so much!

It's good to just get out and have some fun ice fishing, but also try all the great new gear that Clam has come out with. While the new jigs, shacks and augers are great I really like all of the new safety gear. We can be quick to forget how nasty big lakes and even small lakes can become extremely dangerous.

I'm not sure if you can blog a blog...but I will be doing a weekly blog for North American Fisherman. They have giving me a long rope and it should be a fun read. Make sure to check it out.

While we are suppose to get another 5'' of snow tonight... I'm not going to complain. Remember most years its too cold to fish and not cold enough to safely ice fish that much.

Sand and Ice

I think this is the most interesting blog in a while. I write this as my mail is piled up as high as the snow...so please excuse any typos and more fragments than normal. Yes this is sand and not snow.

After a very successful season I took the opportunity to head to the Florida Keys for a little R&R. After the 2013 season I was in desperate need of a battery recharge. A lot of people still think that professional fisherman just fish all day...I can assure you that's not the case. The amount of paperwork and sponsor relations, magazine work, show organizing, and site selection and prep for TV work, etc can keep a guy a long way from the water if he lets it. No, I;m not asking you to shed a tear. Much like the rest of life I try to get as much balance as possible.

Feeding some tarpon by hand just confirms that salt water fish are just about 4 million times more aggressive than ole marble eyes. No matter how long you have a "pet" walleye in a tank they will never eat out of your hand.

Even though I spend my time as a fresh water guy it is funny how small the fishing world is. I saw a Ranger Boats sign near the road and stopped in to get a pic by it to harass my buddies about being in the nice weather. A nice lady came out to ask if we needed help...45 minutes later I was still talking to Jenn and Nate, the owners of Islamorada Boats. http://www.islamoradaboats.com/

It never ceases to amaze me the bond fisherman have, regardless of where you live or what you fish for. If you are a Ranger guy in Florida or just need a boat or some service in that area make sure to look them up.

I am going from 80 to -10 now...next up.... Ice Fishing episode of the "Local Catch"

See ya on the ice

PS--I hear they are biting!!!

Iceing some Giants

It's the time of year when are already thinking about open water and spring fishing...but it's kinda hard when we have some hot ice fishing in the works.

If you have a chance get your hands on the new Clam electric auger conversion kit. It has been amazing.

Next Year

Hard to think about next year since I just stopped fishing a few days ago...but the phone has been ringing with guys looking to secure a spot for next year. Bittersweet as we had a really good year, but after so much fishing I really could use a little break...I must be getting old! Prime dates and weekends fill up fast so get ahold of me.

ICE--I will be working several stops on the promo tour and selling some Walleye Trolling books before we get safe ice. Look me up to chat ice and some of the new goodies that hit the market this year.

BOAT--I still have my 2013 boat available. It is in extremely good shape, loaded and only has 112hrs on it. Message or call me for pics and specifics.
